The adult footballers had a successful weekend, achieving three victories in as many games. The matches in the  Fermanagh Herald Senior Football Division 2 against Erne Gaels on Friday and Aughadrumsee St. Macartan’s on Sunday provided quite a contrast. Friday’s encounter was a close, entertaining game (1-9 to 0-10) but the result on Sunday was inevitable from the early stages due to the home team’s dominance in all sectors. The score line at half time was 1-8 to 0-1 with Aughadrumsee’s point coming from a free in the thirtieth minute. The second half continued in the same vein with St. Joseph’s eventually leading by 2-12 to 0-2 before a late scoring flourish by the visitors yielded 1-2, the goal coming from a penalty. Michael Mc Aleer made his senior debut on Friday, scoring a point and followed that on Sunday with an impressive tally of 2 goals and 2 points. Saturday evening’s game in the B.Mc Caffrey & Sons Erne Cup 2 against Enniskillen Gaels was a relatively easy victory for St. Joseph’s, after a fairly competitive first half (0-8 to 0-4) the home team took control in the second period and scored a further 2-8 to win by 2-16 to 0-5.

The senior team and scorers  V Erne Gaels was as follows: Gerard Mc Loughlin, Damien Cassidy, John Irvine, Conor Maguire, Aaron Dennison, Conor Keown, Dwayne Mc Alynn, Martin Mc Grath(0-4), Chris Snow, Declan Mc Cusker, Peter Gormley, Darren Mc Cusker(0-1), Michael Mc Aleer(0-1), Enda Ferris(1-3) and Declan Deazley. Subs: Finbar Mc Grath for Conor Keown, Conor Keown for Finbar Mc Grath and Paul Gallogley for Darren Mc Cusker.

There was one change on the starting fifteen on Sunday V Aughadrumsee, Manus Maguire replacing Conor Keown. The substitutions were as follows: Conor Keown for Chris Snow, Conor Mc Grath for Martin Mc Grath, Paul Gallogley for Enda Ferris and Donal Gormley for Conor Maguire. The scorers were: Michael Mc Aleer (2-2), Darren Mc Cusker (0-4), Aaron Dennison and Enda Ferris (0-2) each, Declan Mc Cusker and Peter Gormley (0-1) each.

The club welcomes Jarlath Mc Swiggan from neighbouring club, Drumquin Wolfe Tones as the new senior team manager.

The u14 boys play Enniskillen Gaels in the P.Clarke and Sons League semi-final this week and they will have a coaching session on Thursday at 6.30pm.

The minors play Lisnaskea Emmetts on Friday evening in the semi-final of the Leonard Mc Grath League Division 3. The game is in Irvinestown at 8.00pm.

The u14 girls had another victory on Monday in their game with Derrygonnelly(4-10 to 0-0)  but they lost to Kinawley on Thursday(1-12 to 2-3). This week they travel to Enniskillen and Belcoo and on Monday(9th June) they play Devenish at St. Joseph’s Park in the final game of the league. All games have a 7.30pm throw in.

The u10 boys defeated St. Patrick’s on Thursday evening and they now continue their coaching in preparation for the game against Kinawley on Friday 13th and for the culmination of their competition at the Derrygonnelly Harps’ Blitz on Saturday 28th June.

The club’s three referees: Aidan Cassidy, Alan Richardson and Eugene Mc Donagh were all officiating at the weekend and the club takes this opportunity to thank them for representing us in this vital area of our association’s activities and for their service to the county’s extensive programme of gaelic games.

The June meeting of the club executive committee will take place on Thursday evening in the meeting room at 9.00pm.

Tuesday 27th May 2008.

The u14 girls had a resounding victory in their first league match against Erne Gaels. This week they have two games, away to Derrygonnelly on Monday and at home to Kinawley on Thursday evening.

Well done to the u14 boys on their one point victory over Roslea in the high scoring league play-off match(6-7 to 5-9).

The B.Mc Caffrey & Sons  Erne Cup game against Irvinestown  was not played on Saturday evening so this is the second time that this fixture has not materialised. The Erne Cup team will be back in action this week, playing Enniskillen Gaels in St. Joseph’s Park on Saturday at 6.30pm. Two games in the Fermanagh Herald Senior Football League Division 2 are arranged for this weekend at St. Joseph’s Park: on Friday evening at 7.30pm Erne Gaels are the visitors and on Sunday at 3.30pm Aughadrumsee St. Macartan’s provide the opposition. The u10 boys recorded victories over Enniskillen on Tuesday and Tempo on Friday and they are looking forward to their trip to Donagh on Friday evening to play St. Patrick’s. There will be no coaching for u10s on Saturday because of First Holy Communion. Blessings and good wishes are extended to the boys and girls on that important and happy occasion.

A big thank you to the forty four club members and supporters who participated in the week end coin collection which took place over a twelve hour period on Friday and Saturday at the village roundabout in Ederney. Thank you also to the passing motorists who responded so generously to this fund raising initiative. When the total is finalised it will be published in the local press in accordance with the terms of the permit.

Congratulations to captain, Martin Mc Grath and his Fermanagh team mates on their Ulster Senior Championship victory over Monaghan on Sunday. Martin’s was a “man of the match” performance and local supporters look forward to his eagerly awaited return to the club colours in this weekend’s senior games. Commiserations to Michael Mc Aleer and Declan Mc Cusker on the minors’ defeat on Sunday.

Tuesday 20th May 2008.

The Erne Cup game against Irvinestown scheduled for Saturday evening at St. Joseph’s park did not take place because of the absence of a referee. With no competitive games this weekend because of the Ulster minor and senior championship games the senior footballers are using the opportunity for a challenge game with Belcoo in St. Joseph’s Park on Friday evening at 7.30pm.

There was heartbreak for the boys from St. Joseph’s P.S. in the Cumann na mBunscoil Blitz last Thursday when they lost the final against St. Mary’s Tempo by a single point in extra time. A similar fate befell the girls in the camogie blitz when they lost out to St. Mary’s Maguiresbridge in the semi-final, also in extra time. Well done to the boys and girls on their success in reaching the latter stages of the competitions.

On Monday the u14 girls travel to Derrygonnelly for their second league game in Section 2.

Good luck to Michael Mc Aleer and Declan Mc Cusker who represent Fermanagh in the Ulster Minor Football Championship against Monaghan in Brewster Park on Sunday  and to Martin Mc Grath, team captain, in the senior equivalent.

Arrangements are presently being made for the erection and unveiling of a commemorative plaque, honouring one of the club’s founding members and life long activist, the late Johnny Monaghan. It is hoped to have a senior football challenge with Donegal Four Masters with whom Johnny’s closest surviving family members are current and past players.

Tuesday 13th May 2008.

The club’s adult footballers had a successful weekend with the seniors winning the Fermanagh Herald Senior Football League Div.2 game with Roslea on Friday evening and the juniors winning their B. Mc Caffrey & Sons Erne Cup clash with Kinawley on Saturday evening. Both games being “away” fixtures added to the sense of satisfaction. On Friday the team trailed the Shamrocks for most of the game but a very strong finishing twenty minutes turned a six point deficit into a three point victory (2-8 to 0-11). Enda Ferris and Dwayne Mc Alynn were the goal scorers. On Saturday the juniors led at half time due to a Justin Maguire goal but fell behind half way through the second half after four unanswered points from Kinawley. The introduction of Declan Mc Cusker, Conor Maguire and Joe Monaghan to the forward line soon put the visitors back in the ascendancy and they went on to win by four points(1-12 to 0-11). Compliments  are extended to Kinawley Brian Borus on their excellent playing surface.Team and scorers: Kevin Daly, Michael Muldoon, Gerard Mc Loughlin, Finbar Gillen, Donal Gormley, Dominic Gillen, Conor Cassidy, Conor Keown, Damien Cassidy, Michael Mc Aleer(0-2), Justin Maguire(1-0), Peter Cassidy, Conor Mc Grath (0-2), Brian Hegarty, Paul Galogley(0-5). Tuesday 6th May 2008.

Sunday afternoon’s   first game of this year’s Fermanagh Herald Division 2 Senior Football  League lived up to all the expectations of a close, keenly fought local derby with neighbouring  Irvinestown at St.Joseph’s Park. The match was decided in the final minutes when the visitors scored the decisive goal in a break away attack to win by two points (3-9 to 2-10).  Although they were defeated the team and management will hope to carry the spirit and commitment of this performance into the next encounter which takes place in Roslea on Friday evening at 7.30pm. Players are asked to assemble in Ederney at 5.30 on Friday.

On Saturday evening the Erne Cup team recorded another victory, defeating Belnaleck at St. Joseph’s Park on a score line of 1-12 to 1-6. The u14s gave way to a stronger Enniskillen Gaels team in the semi-final of Feile na nÓg on Saturday evening in St. Joseph’s Park, the game having been switched from Irvinestown. Playing against a very strong breeze in the first half the boys scored an early goal but that was to be their only score of the half. After the resumption the visitors continued to dominate and registered a few vital scores. When the home team eventually got going, playing with the breeze the deficit proved too much and although they battled to the end, scoring a further two goals and three points, they had to concede to the strength of their opponents. They continue with their league engagements this week on with a trip to Kinawley  to play the local Brian Borus and  on next Tuesday evening they travel to Roslea.Training on Thursday at 6.30pm.

Conor Keown was strong at centre-half back. Damien Cassidy at midfield alongside Justin Maguire until he retired injured and was replaced by Brian Hegarty held sway in that sector while captain, Conor Mc Grath and Declan Mc Cusker were the most effective forwards on this occasion. Next Saturday they play in round two of the Erne Cup but details of the fixture are not known at the time of going to press.

This was another highly successful and enjoyable hurling initiative for our youngest players and on their behalf thanks is extended to Adrian and Kate Mc Gee, Claire Morris and Justin Maguire. The teams were formed from the following panel of players: Curtis Timlin, Jordan Beacom, Roisin Corry,Ryan Morris, Conor Mc Gee,Sarah Britton, Eilis Walsh, Paul Devenney, Michael and Paul Maguire, Shauna Donnelly, Aoife Cullen, Nora Monaghan, Conall Mc Aleer and Daragh Mc Gee.

Tuesday 22nd January 2008

The u21 footballers’ re-entry to the competition in the semi-final clash with Tempo on Sunday in Belleek ended in defeat after a closely fought encounter which could have gone either way. To say the team was under strength would be an injustice to the players who lined out such was the abundant effort and will to succeed which they brought to this game. Paul Mc Hugh and Dermot Monaghan both made a welcome return to the club colours and Stephen Mc Grath made the journey from England at short notice to take his place at mid field. Chris Snow was superb in defence with great support from Manus Maguire, Conor Keown, Aaron Dennison, and Finbar Gillen. Peter Gormley had a hand in most of the team’s best play and was one of the game’s most prominent individuals. Aaron Mc Alynn gave notice of why he is in contention for a place on the county u21 team. He was top scorer( 1-3), all his scores coming in the first half when he was playing as an orthodox full forward and winning everything which came his way. Enda Ferris led the attack with Declan Mc Cusker also prominent and Conor Cassidy, Dermot Monaghan and Peter Cassidy all making telling contributions to an outstanding team effort which just came up short on a score line of 1-12 to 2-6. The winners defended three successive forty fives in the final minutes as St. Joseph’s sought an equalising goal. There was certainly no shame in this defeat and compliments again to the joint managers, John Irvine and Sean Mc Caffrey. Good luck to Tempo in the final and thanks to Erne Gaels for hosting the game.

The dinner dance which was postponed in November is provisionally fixed for Friday 22nd February in Lusty Beg.

Preparations are under way for the club’s participation in Scór Sinsear with the Fermanagh finals taking place in Tempo on Saturday 23rd February at 7.30pm.The arrangements for Ballad Group, Novelty Act, Solo Singing, Recitation and Quiz are at various stages of organisation with a hope that Instumental Music will be contested as well. Are there any dancers for Ceili or Set?

Sympathy is extended to the Cullen family, Clonee on the death of Jimmy. Ar dheis lamh Dé go raibh a anam.

Tuesday 15th January 2008

The u10 hurlers won eight of the ten games they played and drew the other two during the indoor blitz in the Bawnacre, Irvinestown on Saturday. It was a very enjoyable and highly satisfying opportunity for the young players (boys and girls) from the participating clubs and great credit is due to HDM, Fabian Burns and the Fermanagh Hurling Board for this highly effective means of promoting the game. Our club representatives, with their mentors, Adrian and Kate Mc Gee and Claire Morris, were: Curtis Timlin, Jordan beacom, Roisin Corry,Ryan Morris, Conor Mc Gee,Sarah Britton, Eilis Walsh, Paul Devenney, Michael and Paul Maguire, Rhys Neely, Shauna Donnelly, Aoife Cullen, Nora Monaghan, Conall Mc Aleer and Daragh Mc Gee.The inodor sessions in St. Joseph’s Hall continue in preparation for the next blitz which will take place in the Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen on Saturday 26th January.

Tuesday 8th January 2008

The u21 team made a disappointing and, for themselves, their management and small group of loyal supporters, a frustrating exit from the competition on Saturday evening when they played Belcoo in the re-arranged quarter final at Derrygonnelly. The disappointment stemmed from the fact that for a lengthy period of the first half they did not do themselves justice and struggled to produce the standard of play which they had achieved in the earlier games. The frustration was due to the unsatisfactory conclusion. As they prepared for extra time, they were informed that, due to an error in the score keeping, the game had not finished level but in a two point victory (1-7 to 1-5) for the opposition. The players and the management duo of John Irvine and Sean Mc Caffrey deserve great credit for the enthusiasm and enjoyment which they brought to the club’s participation in this competition.

The winners in last week’s club lotto were: £50 Noel Monaghan and £10 each to John Irvine; Jerry Mc Alynn, Trillick; Cassie Mc Grath, Grove Heights; D Steele and Shauna Mc Elhill. The numbers drawn were: 4, 15, 18, 20 and 21. The jackpot for this week is £3,500 and the draw will take place in the New Street Inn on Sunday night.

The club executive meeting on Thursday ( 10th January) evening  at 7.30pm will appoint the subcommittees for the coming year and make arrangements for upcoming events.

Those who are interested in representing the club in Scór Sinsear (over 17 and under 90!) are asked to contact Fr. Pat Mc Hugh or Sean Donnelly during the coming week.

The u10 indoor hurling blitz will take place in the Bawnacre, Irvinestown on Saturday ( 10.30am to 1.30pm). Good luck to the boys, girls and their mentors: Adrian Mc Gee and Claire Morris.

At the AGM in December the youth report drew well deserved attention to the ongoing commitment to the promotion of gaelic games in the local St. Joseph’s Primary School. Kate Mc Gee, the club/school liaison officer was commended for her excellent work in this area and the good will and interest of the school staff was acknowledged.

Tuesday 1st January 2008

Congratulations to senior team manager, Michael Cassidy on his appointment as Fermanagh u21 manager and good luck to him in this new role.

At the recent AGM Brian Hegarty presented a month by month update on the club’s development plan and its progress over the past year. As always funding is the critical element in the furtherance of the plan but a second playing pitch and proper changing facilities for the ever increasing girls’ playing population remain critical priorities.

Sympathy is extended to the Monaghan family on the death of Patrick Keiveney, Crawley, England whose funeral took place recently at St. Patrick’s Church, Montiagh   and to the Dennison family on the death of Thomas Mongan, Aghyaran.

The u21s travelled to Derrygonnelly on Sunday for the quarter-final with Belcoo but the game did not take place because of the absence of a referee.  The match has been rescheduled for next Sunday (6th Jan.) in Derrygonnelly at 11.30am.

The u10 hurlers continue their preparation for the upcoming indoor blitz with a session in the Bawnacre, Irvinestown on Saturday at 11.00am.

Thank you to the race sponsors(The Cross Bar, Monaghan Contracts, L.J. Mc Grath Contracts, Fastrack Recruitment, Mc Hugh Fuels and North Stone),to the 136 individuals who purchased horses and to Rosaleen and Denis Monaghan for hosting  the Nite at The Races on Thursday last.

The next meeting of the club executive committee will take place on Thursday 10th January at 7.30pm in the clubrooms.

Ath-bhliain faoi mhaise dhaoibh go leir! May 2008 be a satisfying and successful year for all our endeavours!

Tuesday 18th December 2007

The u21s play the quarter final against Belcoo on Sunday 30th December, probably at 12.00noon at a venue to be arranged. The actual details of this fixture will be posted on the club website and published in the parish newsletter.

Race sponsors and horse owners are presently being recruited for the annual Nite at the Races which will take place on Thursday 27th December in The Cross, Drumskinney.

Congratulations to Tempo Maguires on their hosting of county convention on Sunday. St Joseph’s’ delegates were Brian Hegarty, Sean Donnelly and Pat Mc Hugh. While the Scór report commended us for promoting competition within the club at Scór na nÓg level the Referee’s sub committee challenges us to make a greater contribution in the recruitment of active referees for youth and adult games.

In his report to our recent annual general meeting, Youth Officer, Justin Maguire commented that: “The ongoing work at youth level continues to remain high in quality and quantity. The majority of our coaches have at least foundation level qualification and the experience delivered to our youth members aged from seven to eighteen years is a credit to all those who are involved in coaching”.

Christmas peace and joy is wished to our officers, players, members, benefactors and supporters. As in previous years the club merchandise section is available and willing to assist Santa Claus in his endeavours. Jerseys, hoodies, and other items in club colours can be acquired by contacting Kate Mc Gee or Declan Monaghan.

Tuesday 11th December 2007

The annual general meeting did not receive the level of support from club members which the voluntary efforts of those who serve the club so generously and selflessly deserved. When the matter of volunteerism and the present controversy over grants for elite county players was raised under AOB, of those who spoke, none agreed with the present arrangement and club delegates were mandated to support the motion from Enniskillen Gaels at the forthcoming county convention. In his address the outgoing chairman, Brian Hegarty who was returned unopposed, had this to say, “The volunteer ethos is what has kept our great Association great, and the volunteers of this club make it the great club that it is. By what you do you ensure that Reverend Croke’s (Archbishop Croke, first patron of G.A.A.) “own grand national sports” are not “entirely forgotten”. We do this by continuing to participate in our great gaelic traditions, by giving people the physical skills to play and achieve and grow strong, the mental skills of discipline, dedication, judgement, commitment and good character, and the emotional skills of humility and fairness. We offer a sense of belonging, of coming from somewhere, of being part of something that matters. We offer a lifestyle that is positive, healthy, and active. You, the volunteers, do all of that. You should be proud, because I certainly am. Without you, this club could offer none of the above, because without you there would be no club. With give and take our distinctive pastimes have flourished in our midst for the past 123 years. Let us do what we can together in 2008 to allow them to flourish once more.”  In a similar vein the secretary, Sean Donnelly, also returned unopposed, in his excellent report paraphrased John F, Kennedy, “Ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club” The other principal officers, in their reports, summarised the happenings of the past year and suggested areas for improvement and further development in the year ahead. All the reports were presented in an attractive booklet which included fourteen coloured images, chosen from the year’s archive of photographs of the club’s younger players and participants in various teams and activities. Copies of the booklet are available from Sean Donnelly.

Treasurer, Dearhaile Mc Hugh’s reported that expenditure exceeded income by almost £6,000. Weekly lotto, sponsorship and advertising hoardings were the principal sources of income and the main areas of expenditure were; grounds development and maintenance, transport for youth teams, team affiliations and county board levies, care of injuries and repayment of Credit Union loan.

The following officers were elected: Chairman , Brian Hegarty; Vice- Chair, Francis Gormley; Secretary,Sean Donnelly; Treasurer, Dearbhaile Mc Hugh; Registrar,Eugene Mc Donagh and committee members: Justin Maguire, Liam Mc Laughlin, Fr. Pat Mc Hugh, Laurence Maguire and Ursula Mc Farland.

On Saturday evening the club represented Fermanagh in three categories (instrumental music, ballad group and novelty act) of the Scór na nÓg provincial semi-final held in the beautiful new G.A.A. Centre in Glenswilly, Co. Donegal. Although unsuccessful in qualifying for the provincial final each of the groups received very positive feedback from the adjudicators and most of them can look forward to further participation in this section of Scór for a number of years. The club takes this opportunity to compliment all of this year’s Scór na nÓg participants on the high standards of performance they achieved. Thanks again to their mentors: Janette Mongan, Carmel Gillen, Colette Maguire and Claire Monaghan.

The attention now turns to Scór Sinsear (over 17). Anyone interested in representing the club in any of the eight categories is asked to contact Fr. Pat Mc Hugh during the next two weeks.

The u21s remain undefeated, they won the final game of the qualifying section against Aughadrumsee on Sunday (3-10 to 2-9).Aaron Mc Alynn scored two goals, one from a penalty and Paul Mc Cusker finished the other one after an impressive interchange of passes involving his brothers, Declan and Darren. Conor  Keown was outstanding in the half back line and Aaron Mc Alynn constantly drove the play forward from mid-field. Conor Cassidy couldn’t be faulted for the shots which eluded him, one was the result of a defensive error caused by the weather conditions and the other was a fine individual effort on the part of the scorer. Chris Snow was his usual commanding presence and Finbar Gillen’s tackling and astute use of possession was of a high order. Wing backs Aaron Dennison and Michael Muldoon handled their defensive duties competently and moved forward at every opportunity to support the attack. Ronan Daly was especially prominent in the second half and won a considerable amount of vital possession in that period. Peter Cassidy worked very hard and like Aaron Dennison and Darren Mc Cusker didn’t spare himself when support was required in any area of the pitch. Paul Mc Cusker, being very closely marked, was obviously the forward most feared by the opposition but he regularly eluded the close attention to make telling contributions throughout the game. Enda Ferris produced his usual quota of deft touches and good scores, one of them a sublime effort off his left boot early in the second half. Declan, the youngest of the Mc Cusker brothers, was involved in most of the scores and his ball handling in very difficult conditions was of a very high standard. The team has a three week interlude now until the quarter-final against Belcoo which is scheduled for Sunday 30th December.

The Youth Presentation Evening on Sunday was a great success and has now become one of the most important and enjoyable events in the club’s yearly calendar. The youth committee, led by Youth Officer, Justin Maguire had obviously planned and prepared assiduously and their efforts were appreciated and applauded by all who attended. Carol Mc Donagh was named as the “Peil na mBan Player of the Year” and Chris Snow received the “Youth Player of the Year” award. Carol was honoured for her exceptional dedication and pleasant and wholehearted participation throughout the year. The citation for Chris spoke of his skill and stature on the field of play and his positive and exemplary lifestyle as a young sportsman, a very good role model for juvenile players. Thanks to: the governors and acting principal, Mrs Daly, of St. Joseph’s Primary School for the use of the facilities, to those who sponsored prizes for the raffle and food for the refreshments, to Janette and Paul Mongan for the amplification and to the willing helpers who prepared the venue and tidied up afterwards.

The u10 hurling remains indoors but switches to the Bawnacre Centre in Irvinestown for this week’s session on Saturday at 11.00am. On Monday it will revert to St. Joseph’s Hall at 5.30pm.

Tuesday 4th December 2007.

Thursday evening’s gathering of the club’s members for the annual general meeting is one of the most important dates in the year’s programme of club activities and events. As well as reviewing the past year it will elect those who will lead the club for the coming year. Members, especially parents of youth players, are invited and encouraged to attend at 7.00pm in the club rooms.

On Saturday evening the club’s Scór na nÓg  novelty act and ballad group will travel to Glenswilly ( some miles beyond Letterkenny on the road to Glenties) to represent Fermanagh in the provincial semi-final. James Maguire, Briege Walsh, Sean Kelly and Majella Walsh will be seeking to emulate their previous performance in the Fermanagh final when they enthralled the audience with the performance of their novelty act. The Ballad Group: Barry Kelly, Niamh  and Roisin Gillen, Niamh Morris and Niall Maguire, will give of their best in  the hope of further success in this very competitive  discipline. Donegal  and Tyrone are the other competing counties. The programme begins at 7.30pm and it is hoped that a sizeable crowd will travel to support our young members in their quest for further honours.

On Sunday the annual youth presentations will take place in St. Joseph’s Primary School, commencing at 4.00pm. The u16 boys and the u14 girls will receive their championship medals .The “youth player of the year” and the “Peil na mBan  player of the year” awards will be presented. All the club’s participants in Scór na nÓg  will perform their respective acts and refreshments will be served. Parents and all club members and supporters are invited to attend. This is an opportunity for us to honour the importance of all the younger members in the life of our club and community and to show our appreciation to the coaches and mentors who devote so much time and energy to the young peoples’ enjoyment of gaelic games and pastimes. Please note that under 16 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.

On Sunday the u21 footballers retained their unbeaten status in the competition with a victory over Kinawley. On a day when many grounds were unplayable due to the heavy rainfall the Brian Borus’ pitch (the club’s second pitch) was in excellent condition. Playing with the strong breeze in the first half the visitors attacked from the throw in and Paul Mc Cusker scored the first of his side’s six goals. Further first half goals were registered by Aaron Mc Alynn (penalty), Enda Ferris after a lengthy “dribble”, reminiscent of another code, and a double salvo from Peter Cassidy  inside a two minute spell. Goal keeper, Conor Cassidy, with great support from Chris Snow, kept a clean sheet, extending the record of no goals conceded to three games. Each of the teams managed just one score when playing into the breeze, a point for the home team and a goal by the visitors, scored by Darren Mc Cusker with the last kick of the game. The final score was 6-9 to 0-6. The team is now qualified for the quarter finals but on Sunday they travel to play Aughadrumsee, St. Macartan’s, also undefeated, in the final match of the qualifying section.

The annual “Nite at The Races” has been arranged for The Cross Bar, Drumskinney on Thursday 27th December. Further details of this event will follow but all intending patrons are asked to note the date and keep it free for a post Christmas evening of fun with the opportunity of making a few pounds or losing a few!

First on stage were the ceili dancers, Michelle Corry,Briege Walsh, Sarah Louise Montague and Laura Mc Farland. They were followed by Ryan Kelly in the solo singing. Carol Mc Donagh (accordion), Niamh Morris(flute), Emer Mc Mulkin(tin whistle) and Ciara Mc Quaid(fiddle) were our instrumental musicians. Our youngest competitor was Cian Mc Alone, fresh from his television appearance (RTE) last week, who gave a wonderful recitation of an adaptation of Frank O’Connor’s “First Confession”. Then it was the turn of Barry Mc Aleer, Niamh Gillen and Niamh Morris in the Bailéad Ghrupa section. In the Nuachleas(novelty act) we were represented by James Maguire,  Briege Walsh, Sean Kelly and Majella Walsh. Last on stage, ensuring that we were the only club represented in all of the evening’s seven categories, was the quiz team of: Kevin Walsh, Carol Mc Donagh and Majella Walsh. Congratulations to all our competitors and well done to the ballad group and novelty act, winners in their sections, who now go forward to represent club and county in the provincial semi-final which takes place in Glenswilly, Co. Donegal on Saturday 8th December. A big thank you to the mentors: Carmel Gillen, Janette Mongan, Colette Maguire and Claire Monaghan.

Condolences are tendered to the family of the late John Maguire whose funeral took place in Luton last week. Go ndeana Dia trócaire ar a anam.

Indoor hurling for the u10s (pupils of P6 and P7) has resumed and will continue every Saturday morning at 11.00am in St. Joseph’s Hall. Children who have attended before are invited to return and those who haven’t are encouraged to come along and give it a try.

The stock of club merchandise has been augmented recently by the arrival of a new supply of adult “hoodies” and polo shirts. Contact Kate Mc Gee or Declan Monaghan.

On Sunday the u21 footballers continued in their winning ways with an impressive victory over Enniskillen Gaels on a score line of 1-13 to 0-4. Played in very good conditions at the St. Micheal’s College playing fields, the performance, while not as fluent as the previous Sunday in Teemore, did produce a number of fine individual displays. The half-back trio of Michael Muldoon, Conor Keown  and Aaron Dennison was especially prominent and between them they contributed five points from play. Manus Maguire kept another “clean sheet” in goals, a combination of his own safe handling and the effective tackling and pressure play of his defensive colleagues. A few overhead catches in the goal area by both Chris Snow and Finbar Gillen were memorable moments of the game. At mid field Peter Gormley was a constant force and Aaron Mc Alynn provided ample evidence that he is well on the way to recovering his best form. Enda Ferris stood tall in every sense, his physical presence allied to his skill and football intuition marked him as a player apart. On Sunday he set himself a standard of performance that his management and team colleagues will want him to reproduce on a regular basis. The Mc Cusker brothers, Darren, Paul and Declan, scorers of one goal and seven points were the main attacking force with very good assistance from Peter Cassidy until he had to withdraw due to injury and was replaced by Conor Cassidy. Paul Mc Cusker, when his best efforts were not getting the reward they deserved, exemplified again the importance of self discipline with respect for colleagues and opponents. Enda Daly made a welcome return after injury and was introduced as a substitute late in the game.

The next game in the competition brings the team to Kinawley on Sunday to play the local Brian Borus.

Members are reminded that the annual general meeting takes place on Thursday 6th December at 7.00pm in the club rooms and the annual youth presentation function will be held on  Sunday 9th December at 4.00pm.

Congratulations to our youthful chairman on reaching another milestone on life’s journey. Good wishes for the next decade, Brian!

Tuesday 20th November

The u21 footballers made an impressive start in the competition on Sunday when they recorded a 3-18 to 0-6 victory over Teemore Shamrocks at the latter’s venue. The home team was first to score, a point from a free but the visitors, playing into the breeze, settled and recorded four points  to establish a lead which was never threatened thereafter. Teemore managed three further first half points to the opposition’s one goal and five. The half time score was 1-9 to 0-5. In the second half St. Joseph’s conceded just one point and playing direct attacking football scored a further two goals and nine points with all but two points coming from play. The first score after the resumption was a point by Enda Ferris from a side line free on the twenty metre line. Chris Snow anchored the defence with Peter Gormley most prominent in the middle of the field. Top scorer, Darren Mc Cusker was very active in the forward line, supporting the player in possession as well as providing the finishing touch to most of the game’s best moves. Mentors, John Irvine and Sean Mc Caffrey will be well pleased with this  performance but they will have noted that too many frees, including three which were scored, were conceded through elementary ball handling errors. The team and scorers were: Manus Maguire, Finbar Gillen, Chris Snow, Michael Muldoon, Conor Keown, Aaron Dennison, Aaron Mc Alynn(0-1), Peter Gormley(0-1), Peter Cassidy(1-1), Darren Mc Cusker(1-6) Enda Ferris(0-2), Declan Mc Cusker (0-2) and Paul Mc Cusker(1-5). Subs: Conor Cassidy for Aaron Mc Alynn and Aaron Mc Alynn for Paul Mc Cusker. On Sunday Enniskillen Gaels will provide the opposition and the game will be played at the St. Michael’s College’s playing fields at Drumclay. The throw in is timed for 12.00 noon.

The annual general meeting will take place on Thursday 6th December at 7.00pm in the club rooms. The annual youth presentation function is fixed for Sunday 9th December at 4.00pm.

The playing pitch at St. Joseph’s Park is closed and will remain so for the months of November, December, January and February. This week the task of restoring the goal mouth areas will commence and it is vitally important that there is absolutely no playing activity on the pitch over the coming months. Parents are asked to ensure that children do not enter the pitch during this time so that the expensive maintenance work presently being undertaken is not damaged or interfered with in any way. Thank you to Gerard Mc Elhill. Raymond Mc Farland, Sean Donnelly and Brian Hegarty who spent Saturday at the club grounds repairing the perimeter fence on the playing pitch.

Thanks to those who contributed to the club’s participation in the “Strip (sports) for Africa” initiative and to Dearbhaile Mc Hugh and Ursula Mc Farland for organising and managing it on the day. Further donations of children’s sportswear or clothing can be made during this week by contacting club chairman, Brian Hegarty.

However the season may not yet be over because the Fermanagh G.A.A. Competitions’ Control Committee has invited clubs to consider the possibility of an u21 football competition. In the event of this materialising the club has decided to enter a team so there may be further competitive action at St. Joseph’s Park before 2007 expires.
